How Black Spark came to be

Black Spark was founded like any great business…

by two people who realized they had an edge.

In our case, it wasn’t a business edge… or a funding edge… it was a technological edge.

an engineering edge.

Let me take a few steps back…

During graduate school, Gunnar invented a groundbreaking system to use plasma for PFAS remediation.

You can read his papers here to follow his process.

He stepped into a field that had been stagnant for decades and immediately identified inferior design principles.

With some luck and help from his professors, they discovered that plasma was incredible at breaking down PFAS.

From there, Gunnar took his new design principles and expertly figured out how to further enhance the plasma reactor speficially for the case of PFAS remediation.

They patented his design and were off to the races.

Gunnar finished his PhD work and went on to other projects where he focused on scaling industrial processes.

Something, it turns out, Gunnar is uniquely good at.

Years went by before Lucy and Gunnar checked back in on what was happening with those reactors Gunnar had designed…

Well, it turns out… nothing much.

Lucy and Gunnar decided to get serious.

The world (or at least the human species) actually needs this technology.

And it’d become abundantly clear that we would have to be the ones to make that happen.

Combining his passion for ever increasing scale

(the dude can’t even plant a few tomatoes without building an 8 tier indoor gardening system with automatic watering and fertilization)

and his brilliant intuition for plasma design…

we endeavored upon this here project.
